Install, Repair and Cool the Engine
Fit a missing engine, use an Engine Repair Kit on a broken engine, and keep the radiator supplied with water or coolant to protect it in Nomad Drive. Read the ignition warning first so you can address the fault it names. Engine condition, fuel, battery charge and cooling each need their own fix.
Choose the Engine and Repair Supplies
In Early Access, the starting Hippie Van comes with level 1 core parts. Check the engine already fitted before looking for a replacement. Engine I also turns up along the road, while Engine II and Engine III come with vehicles you find.
| Part | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Engine I | RV engine tier found along the road and with vehicles. |
| Engine II and Engine III | Later RV engine tiers supplied with discovered vehicles. |
| Motorcycle Engine | The Motorcycle's separate engine part. |
| Engine Repair Kit | Restores 50 engine condition; use it for engine repairs. |
| Charger | Restores 65 battery charge and is used up; use it for battery trouble. |
| Tire Repair Kit | Restores 50 tire condition; use it for tire repairs. |
Treat repair supplies and equipment upgrades as separate jobs. The Ladder, Roof Rack and Motorcycle Holder blueprints add vehicle equipment; they do not restore engine condition. Prioritize the Engine Repair Kit when the ignition reports a broken engine.
Install or Repair the Engine
- Fit an engine if the ignition says "Engine is not installed". This addresses the missing-engine fault so you can check the remaining starting requirements.
- Use an Engine Repair Kit on a broken engine. It restores 50 engine condition and is the repair item for this fault.
- Fill the radiator with water or coolant before running the engine. Keep the same liquid already inside, because water and coolant cannot be poured on top of each other.
- Try the ignition after each fix. Several faults can apply at once, so the next warning may point you toward the battery or fuel tank.
An engine that breaks while you are driving can keep running at about a third of its power. A broken engine will not start again until repaired or replaced. Use that reduced power to reach a repair stop if you can, and keep an Engine Repair Kit aboard for roadside trouble.
Use the Warning to Find the Right Fix
The ignition checks the engine before the battery and fuel. Fix the warning shown, then try again to reveal any remaining problem. Adding gasoline will not repair engine damage, and repairing the engine will not replace radiator liquid.
| Ignition Warning | Next Action |
|---|---|
| Engine is not installed | Fit an engine, then try the ignition again. |
| Engine is broken | Repair it with an Engine Repair Kit or fit another engine. |
| Engine is overheated | Let it cool before restarting, and check the radiator supply. |
| Battery is not installed | Fit a vehicle battery, then retry the ignition. |
| Battery is broken | Recharge the battery with a Charger or fit a working replacement. |
| Fuel tank is not installed | Fit the fuel tank; this separate part applies to the Motorcycle. |
| Out of fuel | Fill the fuel tank, then try starting again. |
| Release the handbrake! | Release the handbrake before driving away. |
Keep the Radiator Supplied
The radiator accepts water or coolant, with only one liquid type inside at a time. Coolant cools better and lasts twice as long as water, but water still works and completes the coolant objective. Drain the radiator before changing from water to coolant or back again.
The starting house supplies a full 5 L Coolant jug. Radiator I holds 6 L, Radiator II holds 12 L and Radiator III holds 18 L, so check the fitted part when refilling. The objective completes at 2 L, but filling the radiator gives you a larger reserve for the drive.
An empty or missing radiator provides no radiator cooling. Above heat 85, the engine loses condition; at 95, it overheats and shuts down. Let it cool to 55 before trying to restart, then deal with the radiator supply so the shutdown does not keep repeating.
Protect the Engine Between Stops
- Top up the radiator with its existing liquid before leaving a stop. The radiator drains while the engine runs, so a previous refill does not last indefinitely.
- Check engine condition while you are stopped. Repair damage before the next drive and keep an Engine Repair Kit aboard for roadside trouble.
- Switch off headlights, cabin lights and wipers when you do not need them. These drain the battery, and a depleted battery stops the engine.
- Look for a gentler route when a steep climb stalls your progress. Players have reported bypassing a difficult slope nearby; check cooling and condition before another attempt.
New roadside vehicles can supply higher-tier core parts. The first vehicle you discover comes with level 2 core parts; the next vehicles in the initial sequence bring level 3 parts. Inspect those parts when you reach a new vehicle, and make a short driving check before reorganizing your supplies.
